It’s probably one of the most overused phrases in job-hunting, but also one of the most underutilized by job-seekers: dress for success. In job-hunting, first impressions are critical. Remember, you are marketing a product—yourself—to a potential employer, and the first thing the employer sees when greeting you is your attire; thus, you must make every effort to have the proper dress for the type of job you are seeking.

In the most basic sense, the current global nursing shortage is simply a widespread and dangerous lack of skilled nurses who are needed to care for individual patients and the population as a whole. The work of the world’s estimated 12 million nurses is not well understood, even by educated members of society. But nursing is a distinct scientific field and autonomous profession whose skilled practitioners save lives and improve patient outcomes every day in a wide variety of settings.

Ms. Dayer, 45-years-old, was one of four candidates who interviewed around the same time for the job. They were all part of a new program, launched in July and designed to accelerate the pharmaceutical company’s recruiting process. Before then, candidates were expected to participate in two or three interviews over a span of several weeks before an offer was made.

Finding the right practice environment that values your education is essential to your long term success and job satisfaction as a nurse. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has developed this brochure to assist nursing students, educated at the baccalaureate level and above, in making the best decision on where to practice following graduation.

AACN has identified 8 key characteristics or hallmarks you should examine when screening potential employers. Each hallmark identified in this brochure is followed by suggested questions that you may ask during an interview.
